October Foraging at Glottenham Castle

Explore the fungi of the High Weald on a guided October foraging course at Glottenham Castle Camping, near Robertsbridge in East Sussex. As autumn settles over the farm’s ancient woodland, open meadows and wetlands, cooler days and seasonal rain bring opportunities to discover mushrooms in a wonderful variety of shapes and colours.

We’ll begin with a warm welcome and an introduction to responsible collecting, including the rules and good foraging practices. Then we’ll spend around 2.5 hours exploring at an easy pace, looking among fallen leaves, along woodland edges and across the meadows for autumn fungi and seasonal plants.

Your instructor will explain the identifying features of our finds and how to distinguish edible species from poisonous lookalikes. Whatever October’s weather brings, you’ll gain practical experience and observation skills to build on each time you head outdoors.

There’s time to pause for a homemade refreshment during the walk, followed by a shared meal from foraged food. Expect a seasonal dish with suitable finds from the day incorporated where available.
Please ensure you have a backup meal for your child.

The learning continues afterwards: we’ll email you our course notes focusing on currently available edible mushrooms, with further reading about the species encountered and discussed.

Bring sturdy footwear and dress for the weather—the ground can be uneven and muddy.

Travelling from London: Direct trains run from London Charing Cross and London Bridge to Robertsbridge, with journeys taking approximately 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes, depending on the service. There is no parking on site.

Address: Glottenham Castle, Bishop’s Lane, Robertsbridge, East Sussex, TN32 5EB.
